The Shepherds of Semmama at the Opening of the IYRP
At the initiative of Mongolian organizations, pastoralists and activists, the United Nations has proclaimed 2026 as the International Year of Pastures and Pastoralists. The regional opening for North Africa and the Middle East is scheduled for today, January 26, under the aegis of the Directorate General of Forestry and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This event, which will continue until January 29, will be inaugurated by the Shepherds of Semmama, bearers of the concerns and joys of the mountain through lively performances that have radiated beyond the borders. The Shepherds of Semmama also participate with an artisanal pavilion. Adnen Helali will present a talk entitled: "The Shepherds' Festival of Jebel Semmama: from pastures to plateaus, the shepherds of the world in echo". In addition, the Jebel Semmama Cultural Centre will present a collection of eco-friendly media - made from sheepskins, cane, clay, halfa fibres and wild woods - entitled Green IYRP, inviting people to reduce the use of plastic as part of the International Year of Pastures and Pastoralists.
