Festival de la Trashumancia

On Sunday, 25 October, as has happened every year since 1994, a flock of sheep and goats will cross the heart of Madrid, following the historic transhumance route from Casa de Campo to the Town hall and back (6 km). This year, in celebration of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, we are also organising a special programme of activities highlighting the importance of pastoralism, transhumance and the people who keep these traditions alive.

Friday, 23 October: A roundtable bringing together pastoralists from different countries, offering an opportunity to exchange experiences and discuss the future of pastoralism worldwide. We will also hold an international session for veterinarians, focusing on biosecurity, animal welfare and One Health.
Saturday, 24 October: A full day of films on pastoralism and transhumance, exploring pastoralist cultures, traditions and contemporary challenges from around the world.
Sunday, 25 October: The sheep and goats will take to the streets of Madrid, continuing the city’s annual transhumance tradition and bringing this ancient practice into the heart of the capital.
