Meet the pastoralists! Tropentag 2026 photo exhibition
16-18 Sept 2026
Venue: Foyer of Main Lecture-Hall Building / Zentrales Hörsaalgebäude (ZHG), Platz der Göttinger Sieben 5, 37073 Göttingen, Germany.
Over half the world’s land surface is rangeland, where grazing animals can produce food and much more without needing fossil-based energy. Yet pastoralists – the people who care for these animals – are rarely seen or given recognition and support for their work. The United Nations proclaimed 2026 as the International Year of Rangelands & Pastoralists (IYRP) in order to raise awareness of the vital importance of rangelands and pastoralism for the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people who maintain sustainable food systems and safeguard biocultural diversity.
The Global Alliance for Rangelands and Pastoralists (GA4RP), which campaigned for IYRP2026, presents this collection of images of pastoralism in all inhabited continents to give Tropentag 2026 participants an opportunity to appreciate the lives and work of pastoralists – old, young, men, women – who are showing the way toward a climate-resilient future.
We thank the photographers, all of whom made their photos available to GA4RP free of charge to show in this exhibition and to share via our website https://iyrp.info. We also thank the University of Göttingen for making this exhibition possible.
For more information, come talk with us at the IYRP booth in the Foyer and view the film festival on pastoralist women.
