In its 76th session, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution made by the Government of Mongolia to celebrate an International Year of Rangelands & Pastoralists (IYRP). UNGA designated 2026 as the IYRP and invited the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to facilitate its implementation. FAO officially started preparations for the IYRP by setting up its IYRP Steering Committein mid-2025 and developing its own IYRP logo and website. FAO will inform the 82nd session of UNGA in 2027 about the implementation of IYRP 2026, including an evaluation. In the years between UNGA's adoption of the resolution in 2022 until FAO commenced facilitation of the implementation in 2025, several units within FAO worked closely with the IYRP Global Alliance in preparing for the Year - and is continuing to do so.
